Hasan Azizul Haque
Colleagues and a family member of fiction writer and former Rajshahi University professor Hasan Azizul Haque recalled their memories of the author on Monday during a program on the RU campus.
The Department of Philosophy at Rajshahi University hosted the program in the Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Senate Building to commemorate the Independence Prize-winning writer who passed away on November 15 this year.
UK Vice-Chancellor Prof. Golam Sabbir Sattar addressed the program as the main guest while pro-vice-chancellors Prof. Chowdhury M Zakaria and Prof. Sultan-ul-Islam, l ‘addressed as special guests.
The program began with the screening of a documentary film on the author’s life and work.
The speakers discussed Hasan’s illustrious career and his contributions to Bengali literature. They recalled their associations with him as well.
The Vice Chancellor said Hasan was an invaluable resource for Bengali language and literature.
“He will live forever in his matchless work … Rajshahi University has been honored to bury him next to the Central Library of Rajshahi University,” he added.
Former philosophy professor Mahendranath Adhikari said Hasan struggled his whole life.
“He has always been on the side of the marginalized and oppressed. His irresistible pen has always fought against injustice and oppression, ”he said.
Hasan’s son and associate professor at the university, Imtiaz Hasan, said his father led a very ordinary life.
Philosophy Department Chairman Prof Shamima Akhter said Hasan is an icon of the Philosophy Department and his absence may never be filled. She also urged the university authorities to rename the central library in honor of the former professor of the department.
Among others, the former professor of mathematics Subrata Majumder, the former professor of Bangla Zulfiqar Matin, the former professor of philosophy Khanam Mumtaz Ahmed, professor Abdur Razzak also spoke during the show.
