When Marc Turgeon resigned as Maryland coach on Friday, his former varsity teammate and freshman assistant Terrapin Danny manning has been chosen as interim coach to close the remainder of the season. Kansas star and longtime aide, Manning was most recently a head coach at Wake Forest, where he was fired after reaching 78-111 and reaching the NCAA tournament once in six years.
But he inherits a very different situation in Maryland. The level of talent is such that most have ranked the Terrapins in the top 25 teams heading into the season. And while Maryland didn’t quite live up to those expectations in a 5-3 start, perhaps a gear change could straighten the ship out for this season … and potentially make Manning a potential candidate. for this post, or for others.
So what is Manning’s coaching philosophy? He spoke about it with CBS Sports’ Chip Patterson shortly after taking over as Wake Forest.
âWhat’s good for the team is good for you,â Manning said at the time. âAnd that’s just the mindset we need to have. I think Coach Self talked about it all the time, “The cake is big enough for everyone if we do it the right way.” In ten years, what will be the legacy of this team? There are some instances where people say, “Hey, I remember when Randolph Child scored 35 points per game in the ACC tournament and Wake Forest won. ‘ It’s a great moment. It’s a great memory. But you talk to Randolph and he’ll say, “We had a great bunch of guys on the team and everyone sacrificed themselves for each other and we did it for each other” or “L coach Odom really made us play at a high level. âThese are the memories you hold dear as a former member of the team.
And Manning cited his ability to understand players as one of his strengths.
âAs a player I was the guy who got called in to start and score points,â Manning said. âI was a starter, an entertainer, I was a sixth man, I was a rotation guy, I was a non-rotation guy, I got injured. roles on a team throughout my career you may have. So I can relate to each individual on our team. I’m not sure exactly how that particular person is feeling, but I have a pretty good idea .
âIt’s something that I love to share with all of our guys,â Manning said. âPlus, for me, I’m not in the situation I’m in now, unless I take my academics seriously. Will come out of the ball.â
Three-time US and National Consensus Player of the Year, Manning led Kansas to the 1988 National Championship with a team called “Danny and the Miracles,” thanks to his dominating performances. And he showed that kind of potential in the NBA, making two All-Star teams before his career was cut short by injuries. He still spent 14 years in the league, then began his coaching career at the bottom, as the manager of the Kansas team from 2003 to 2006, under Bill yourself. This led him to an assistant coaching position from 2006-2012, where he earned a reputation as one of the best big-man developers in the country. The four big men of the 2008 National Championship team played in the NBA: Darrell arthur, Darnell jackson, Sasha kaun and Cole aldrich. And the players like Marcus and Markieff Morris, Thomas robinson and Jeff Withey grew up under Manning’s tutelage and also reached the NBA.
Kansas’ run to the 2012 national championship game led to his first coaching opportunity, in Tulsa. And after his second team Golden Hurricane won the regular season and Conference USA tournament titles to reach the NCAA tournament, he was selected for the position of Wake Forest.
He continued to find success grooming great men even as a head coach; John collins found success in the NBA, Olivier Sarr became a college star before transferring to Kentucky. Neither did the top 150 players, showing his ability to find and develop players outside of the blue chippers, which was necessary in that Manning sometimes struggled to recruit at Winston-Salem, and one of his top talent in recent years, Jaylen’s treasure, left early, condemning what had been a top 25 recruiting class before it could generate momentum.
Manning’s top team, in 2016-17, was 19-14, 9-9 in the ACC, reaching the top four in the NCAA tournament. The next two years saw identical scores of 11-20 and 4-14, and although his team improved slightly in 2019-20 to 13-18 and 6-14, that was not enough for them to maintain their use. Manning spent the 2020-21 season as a college basketball analyst on ESPN, then joined Maryland in the offseason as an assistant.

“I am delighted to add Danny to our coaching staff,” said Turgeon when he hired Manning. âI’ve known Danny for a long time from when we were teammates in Kansas and can’t say enough about him as a coach and as a human being. He’s seen it all in basketball and will bring it to life. unparalleled experience at our program. Danny has a background of recruiting in the DMV area and has many connections locally and nationally. I am delighted that he is coming to College Park and meeting the great guys in our locker room. “
