Tenuta Luce Brunello is produced from 11 hectares of Sangiovese grapes in the Madonnino vineyard, a blessed site in Montalcino. The 2017 vintage presents superb quality and extraordinary authenticity.
Montalcino, Italy, April 5, 2022 – Tenuta Luce, located in the heart of Val d’Orcia in Tuscany with 11 hectares of vines (27 ac) officially registered in the Brunello di Montalcino Register, is proud to release the 2017 vintage of Luce Brunello. Created as a tribute to Montalcino and its world-famous winemaking traditions, Luce Brunello is the quintessence of the appellation’s famous wine.
Luce Brunello is the result of a selection of the best Sangiovese grapes from the Madonnino vineyard, a blessed site in Montalcino, which enjoys a perfect aspect and galestro soil (rocky and shale clay). The 2017 vintage powerfully expresses the concentration and richness of the fruits of the growing season. Overall, 2017 was hot, dry and early. Madonnino’s privileged position and unique climate protected it from excessive climatic conditions and ensured an early harvest that resulted in perfectly healthy and healthy bunches.
Meticulous work in the vineyard and even more attentive vinification efforts have given a noble wine, with a solid structure, a ruby color with elegant garnet reflections and great aging potential. Luce Brunello 2017 exhibits vibrant acidity, a sweet and spicy texture, and fine, silky tannins that evolve as the wine progresses, revealing an innate elegance and layered complexity that lead to a long, dynamic finish.
“At the heart of Tenuta Luce’s winemaking philosophy is our continuous and detailed observation of our vineyards to determine the exact time of harvest,” explained Tenuta Luce winemaker Alessandro Marini. “Thus, we didn’t hesitate to move the start of the harvest forward by ten days compared to previous seasons. In the winery, we paid great attention to selecting only the best berries, separating even the driest from the others, then we shortened the maceration time to extract the noblest components from the grapes.
Tenuta Luce operates with a philosophy of minimal human intervention, using sustainable and non-invasive practices throughout the production process, from viticulture to winemaking. “Each season deepens our understanding of our environment and our commitment to protect our delicate ecosystem, to enhance every aspect of this unique territory, starting from its essence, the blessed fruit of nature,” added Marini.
“Land is our raw material, which gives shape to everything,” said Marchese Lamberto Frescobaldi, President of Tenuta Luce and the Frescobaldi Group, “We are also the fruit of this unique land in Montalcino, when the Tenuta Luce project began in the 1990s, and it has become our own home. It embodies the idea that wine should be the most natural expression of the territory that raises it, like its own child. Luce Brunello 2017 is the perfect fruit of this view.
2017 GROWING SEASON AND VINTAGE PROFILE
The 2017 growing season started with a mild and relatively dry winter, which brought early bud break. A sharp drop in temperatures at the end of April, widespread throughout Tuscany, caused no damage to the estate’s vineyards, thanks to their high hillside elevations. From May to August, little rainfall and intense heat slowed the growth of the vine and reduced the size of the bunches. The beneficial rains at the beginning of September relieved the vines in the late stages of maturation. The harvest, which began about ten days earlier than normal, delivered slightly small but healthy bunches, whose favorable skin to juice ratios exhibited significant concentrations of polyphenols and tannins.
Luce Brunello 2017 presents a deep and shimmering ruby red color. The bouquet on the nose conveys intense aromas of wild red fruits, sour cherry, ripe blood orange and sweet spices. The mouth is immediately rich and enveloping, evolving towards superbly integrated tannins. The lingering finish offers an intriguing palette of tangy fruit. Overall, the 2017 Luce Brunello is a wine of impressive concentration and depth, with great aging potential.
The Sangiovese grapes were harvested in mid-September. After a 12-day fermentation at 28oC (82.4oF), the wine macerated on the skins for four weeks, followed by aging in large Slavonian oak barrels for 24 months. 30,000 bottles were produced.
