LENOIR, North Carolina (March 4, 2022) – Caldwell County schools are now enrolling kindergarten students who will be five years old by August 31, 2022. Parents are encouraged to go online at www.caldwellschols.com and complete a registration form.

“Children will be introduced to an exciting new educational environment,” said Superintendent Dr. Donald Phipps. “We want this first year to be a positive experience for both the family and the child. There are many opportunities to ensure a successful school experience, and to get off to a good start, we encourage all parents to register early and participate in kindergarten screening.

To register, parents go to the district’s website at www.caldwellschools.com and follow the instructions on the kindergarten enrollment dashboard. This begins the process of adding a child’s record to the Student Information System.

Kindergarten screening is separate from the registration process and takes place on a school’s campus. Parents must bring the following documents to the kindergarten screening:

• Personal and emergency information;

• Verification of date of birth — a certified copy of the child’s birth certificate or other satisfactory proof;

• Proof of residency (ie current utility bill, title deed or rental lease); and

• The child’s up-to-date vaccination record.

North Carolina law requires that every child undergo a comprehensive kindergarten health evaluation no later than the first day of school, but no more than 12 months before the school start date. Kindergarten evaluation forms are posted on the PreK webpage at www.caldwellschools.com and are available at schools, doctors’ offices, and the Caldwell County Health Department.

After kindergarten registration is complete, the student’s school will contact parents to schedule a screening appointment or to register for kindergarten screening. A parent or guardian should contact the district school assigned to their child. If a school transfer was submitted during the open enrollment period, parents must make an appointment at the requested school for the transfer. In the event that the transfer request is not approved, the student’s records will be sent to the originating school.

Kindergarten screenings are scheduled for March and April. During these events, students and parents meet class teachers, visit the school and learn about the school environment. Representatives from Parent Organizations (PTA or PTO), WrapAround (Before and After School Program), Transportation, and Child Nutrition Program are on hand to provide information about their respective areas and distribute resources.
