Could recent injuries change the philosophy of the offseason?

The Colorado Rockies saw their starting rotational depth eroded even further with the injury of Antonio Senzatela. He suffered a torn ACL on Thursday, which means he’s finished the season. Chad Kuhl has been out for over two weeks but is heading to Triple-A Albuquerque for early rehab.

With their injuries, the Rockies exhausted their starting throwing depth when it wasn’t very deep to start with.

Will these injuries cause the Rockies to change their offseason philosophy?

Rockies: Antonio Senzatela’s injury could change their offseason philosophy

The Rockies expect Antonio Senzatela to be back and ready for Opening Day in 2023, but with their recent injuries in their rotation, the club may be looking for greater throwing depth this offseason.

Ahead of Friday’s game against the Giants at Coors Field, manager Bud Black spoke to the media about it, including Rox Pile.

“Any team will tell you — any GM, front office — they’re always looking to improve pitching, regardless of team,” Black said. “It’s pretty standard. We will line up with the other 29 teams.

“You know what we want? Good launchers.

Rockies general manager Bill Schmidt echoed a sentiment similar to that of MLB.com’s Thomas Harding in his newsletter.

“We will always have to develop the pitch, and a lot is happening along the way to get there, said general manager Bill Schmidt. “Guys are going to get hurt. The guys aren’t going to progress the way you thought they would. So we are constantly trying to look to launch in every possible way.

Black also said the Rockies hope minor league starters Ryan Rolison and Peter Lambert (who both suffered injuries in 2022) will be healthy and can be contributors in 2023. Dinelson Lamet has been a great starter for the Padres in 2020. (4th in NL voting Cy Young) but due to injuries and control issues he was a reliever.

In the most recent episode of the Rox Pile Rockies Report, we discuss how the Rockies could change their offseason philosophy because of injuries and how changes could be on the horizon for the club this offseason.

We also discuss CJ Cron’s recent struggles and the one area of the team that has improved significantly since the start of the season.
