Caroline de Maigret on her travel style and philosophy

In our series MC Musesavvy women from around the world share their style, their ambitions and the hottest pieces to shop right now.

Taking the path less traveled is obvious for Caroline de Maigret. Her multi-faceted career as a model, Chanel ambassador, rock music producer and author has taken her around the world and back. Authentically experience each new spot in and out of your hometown of Paris (opens in a new tab) is often his goal.

As one of Marriott’s Luxury Collection Global Explorers, de Maigret has documented her years of travels and turned them into city guides to some of the world’s most cosmopolitan places – Paris, Venice, Athens. Each destination’s handbook contains its must-see spots, from hotels to cafes, and its best-kept secrets. The recommendations adhere to its travel philosophy: immersing yourself in the sights, sounds, and people of a place creates the best memories.

Ahead of August’s busy travel season, we caught up with de Maigret to learn more about her jet-setting rules, the pieces she never leaves home without, and her strategy for discovering a city’s best local hideaways. .

Marie Claire: How do you keep a routine?

Caroline de Maigret: I walk immediately after waking up in a new city for at least 20 minutes. I need my body to be active. Then I read the news and start writing. I do all my creative work in the morning. It’s the same whether I’m in Paris or in Japan. I try to fit in all my hard work [done] at the start of the day.

MC: You are known for your sense of style. How would you describe your travel outfit?

CDM: I always want to look cool; I don’t change my style. I always like to have an androgynous rock and roll side. I feel especially daring when I wear a leather jacket. It’s like a good friend. My other suitcase staples are a bathing suit – you never know when you’ll need it – a sweater, a pair of sneakers and a long black dress. If by chance someone takes me to a party, asks me to climb a mountain, or wants to swim in the sea, I’m ready.

MC: How do you find your way to new places?

CDM: I tend to wander around, but a long time ago I started writing people I meet in different cities, and will text them if I ever go there. I ask them for recommendations for restaurants and vintage stores. Sometimes I get great recommendations that you couldn’t find on the internet. I found out that people in bars always know where the good vinyl stores are.
