The university is seeking admission for the 2021-22 academic year from engineering students with an undergraduate degree. Since defense technology is a multidisciplinary field, students from a wide range of engineering backgrounds – from chemical engineering to computer science, can apply, according to a university statement here. M.Tech. Defense Technology Courses have been designed to train postgraduate students who will have the theoretical and experimental knowledge, skills and abilities needed in various contemporary defense systems and technologies to carry out R&D. The program will be based on lectures and main thesis work, he said. During the program, students will have the opportunity to do their main thesis work in DRDO laboratories, defense PSUs and private defense industries, he said.

According to the university statement, India’s defense sector is booming as the central government continues to focus on indigenizing defense to make the country currently the world’s third largest importer of weapons and defense equipment, autonomous. Therefore, the national defense market is booming and the defense industry in both public and private sectors is looking for hires, he said. A specialized program like the current one is expected to create a large pool of talented manpower for the defense sector and give a boost to the ecosystem of defense startups, he added. At the launch of Mr Tech in Defense Technology, G Satheesh Reddy, Chairman of DRDO, said there is an urgent need to broaden the research base to develop cutting edge technology and accelerate India’s technological self-sufficiency in defense. “Amrita has worked with DRDO on many cutting edge technologies – particularly in defense R&D. I am sure the university will be a source of talent for the robust defense R&D and manufacturing ecosystem for the defense industry in the country, ”he said.

P Venkat Rangan, Vice Chancellor of Amrita University, said their vision is to contribute to nation building by providing quality higher education in areas of strategic importance to the country in engineering, medicine, education and social sciences.
