Advice for design and technology and food technology

VScompleting a major project was the most rewarding part of the industrial technology course for Liam Rodgers. But he thinks that’s not why he was among the best in 2020.

When Liam looks back on his HSC year, a highlight was designing and producing a piece of furniture for his major industrial technology project.

Seeing his design come to life was gratifying, so much so that he was tempted to spend more time than needed to perfect the item. But at the start of his year at HSC, Liam spent a lot of time preparing for and studying for the written exam.

Essay writing, in particular, is where Liam saw the potential to get the most marks.

“Practical testing was what I found most important. “

Liam Rodgers

“Doing practical testing was what I found most important [to achieving high marks],” he says.

Liam also took notes on program topics to reinforce his multiple-choice and short-answer answers.

“I found it really useful for these types of exam questions.”

Liam Rodgers.

It was a lot of work, but Liam firmly believes that paying so much attention and effort to the practical and theoretical aspects of the course is the reason he scored well in his HSC.

Best Response to Food Technology Exam in 2020

Exam question:

A food manufacturing company has developed a dairy-free, shelf-stable probiotic spread.

Describe the health benefits of this product for consumers.

Student’s response:

This product contains probiotics, which create healthy gut flora and reduce gastrointestinal complications or inflammation. It is also dairy free, which meets the needs of consumers who are allergic or intolerant to lactose. This means that consumers with special needs have a food option that meets their health needs.

Marker’s comments:

The question asks for more than one benefit and this answer provides detailed characteristics of two of the characteristics of the product: PROBIOTICS (for example, creates healthy intestinal flora, reduces gastrointestinal complications) and NO DAIRY (for example, the product can be consumed by a person suffering from food allergies or intolerance, with a specific link to lactose).
